Occupational Therapy Issues and Reflections

Let’s talk about Occupational Therapy……………

Using Web 2.0 information for clinical practice June 18, 2007

Hi World. Had a great week visiting schools.  Spoke with a principal who is into the technology scene – knows about blogging and social bookmarking.  Formulated idea to provide ideas for a student to the teacher aide via a www.youtube.com video link and also have it translated into the language the teacher aide speaks. It will be a positive outcome for the student – as the teacher aide can watch it over and over in the language she speaks.

This Web 2.0 technology is really all over the place. Tomorrow off to Christchurch to visit with the other South Island occupational therapists. Will be presenting to my colleauges on day 2 of the get together for the last 1/2 hour so probably we will all be pretty tired by then.

Tonight in class we learned about www.secondlife.com – a place called Second Life. Sort of a virtual world. Makes me think of the Truman Show movie………….   In second life, people can make money called Linden’s, etc.  One woman has made millions evidently on there. Pretty neat. Kind of scary though. Are we being taken over by technology?  Will we one day no longer need to chat with each other face to face?  Should we be worried?

Have to think about this one.

OK – that’s all for now.

Hi – missed class last week.  Feel way out of the loop.  Back into it. Getting into this blogging thing. The Pasifika Fono group may be interested in blogging, social bookmarking, etc.  It was Pasifika Day last Friday at work – dressed up in Pasifika gear and co-won first place and got a necklace of lollies to share with friends.  June 1st celebrated the one year anniversary of the Pasifika Education Plan http://www.minedu.govt.nz/index.cfm?layout=index&indexID=4332&indexparentid=4329

In my work, I have not worked as an occupational therapist with children with children from the Pacific Islands as far as I know.  It is interesting to learn about people from the Pacific Islands.  http://www.minedu.govt.nz/index.cfm?layout=index&indexID=10158&indexparentid=4329

OK – off to work as class.

Keep on blogging…………

Jillian :)

Hey bloggers – check out Greg Carroll’s blog http://blog.core-ed.net/greg/. Lots of stuff about RSS feeds, web 2.0, and Wiki stuff. I have to have a proper look. Think I’ll post on his site and see if I get people back to mine. He is miles beyond me with this stuff but hey – think he had an ICT sort of type job for a full year last year…..   Greg is a principal at Outram School in Dunedin area. I work with his wife Jane Carroll who is an SLT and widely published.

OK – off to work.

Pediatric OT – Engagement with Families May 14, 2007

Learning lots about working with families. Humbled really at what it entails. Some great families out there supporting their children and trying to keep track of this person and that person from different agencies. I work in the healthcare field and can barely keep track of who’s who.  A challenge.  Also – what is the goal for having children with different abilities mainstreamed? A big question.  Sometimes the purpose of a lesson might be having students side by side – could be learning is at different levels but hey – that doesn’t matter.

Tonight in class we are doing bloglines and other linking. Learned a bit about this. Once again, I need more time to do this. monday’s roll around quickly and I need to be more diligent – maybe 15 mins per day.

OK – back to work.  Merrolee our professor and leader in this research has a blogger t shirt on. Pretty cool.

Cheers and have a good week big wide world.

Keep on blogging….. May 7, 2007

Hi everyone – Back at class tonight. Just had a really great week engaging with schools I work in. Time is a good thing as far as building therapeutic relationships – then you get the trust required to move forward. Lots more to say about this.

I need to spend more time doing this.  Have to practice. Wow!!

Get me all fired up. Now…can someone give me 26 hours per day………..

Rock on.  Signing off now.

Tonight class was cool. Learning to do tagging, bundling, and all that jazz!!!  So cool.  Even tho I am fairly confident with technology, I find this all very new. Not too daunting but really pretty neat. Enjoying being in the same room with other OT’s who are learning as well. Quite a buzz!!

I want to spend more time on this out of class and get really organized. I hope to learn a lot!!!

OK – just wrapping up for the night.

Cheers……………..:)

Becoming a delicious blogger…. April 29, 2007

Hey Everyone.  Second time in the lab doing the Web 2.0 stuff. I have to spend more time doing this as it is fascinating and amazing how much you can learn.  Neat to see other OT’s talking about the PTA. I used the Westmead PTA when I was an occupational therapist at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and worked on the neurosurgery ward.  It was interesting using it and trying to teach others how to use it.   I was never sure whether consultants and registrars used the PTA as an indicator for discharge.  When I think about it – gets me excited about my work at the hospital. That’s all for now.
