More later.  I have so much to learn but all cool – getting excited about it.

Second Life Tour July 2, 2007

Filed under: Leisure, Web 2.0, elearning, general remarks — bella49 @ 5:29 am

We are right now looking at Second Life. It is so cool. www. secondlife.com.  Second life blog can be found here: http://blog.secondlife.com/.  The blog about itYou can make your person look like whatever you want. Adjust the physical characteristics, etc.  It is so cool – when typing on the keyboard – the person looks like they are typing.

Just went to this area where you could see what it is like to live as a person with schizophrenia. Really disturbing to see how challenging life would be. Amazing potential with this. This man is taking us around this virtual world.

Off to play and explore more.

Cheers.

Hi Bloggers – just found this link on Greg Carroll’s blog.  It is all about proposition 2.5 and budgets in towns around Massachusetts, USA.  Check it out:  http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/06/23/stoneham_cuts_all_sports_at_high_school/?page=1

Hard to believe all school sports will be cut.  Very sad.

Off to work.

Last class tomorrow. July 1, 2007

Filed under: Web 2.0, general remarks, occupational therapy — bella49 @ 9:36 am

Well – tomorrow is our last day to participate in Merrolee’s research project. Was good to meet with Anna last friday to answer some more questions.  Realized how much I have enjoyed this research project – and that I hvae leanred heaps about Web 2.0.

The main theme seems to be I need to spend more time on it full stop.  No excuses. More time using Web 2.0 tools. The thing I use everyday is  I GOOGLE.  Have it as my main page.  Probably look most at my own blog and my delicious bookmarks.  Do a bit with BLOGlines and CiteULike. Even showed my friends and colleauges Son of Citation. What a geek I am!!

I had a good weekend – relaxed at home and out on the Taieri with my friends and family. Our stubborn 4.5 month old labrador Bella finally (after 1 hour of calling) came across some shallow water. She is so so stubborn.  Right now she is lying (lieing) down by my feet sleeping and snoring. A good girl.

OK – that’s all for now folks.

 Blog on!!

Using Web 2.0 information for clinical practice June 18, 2007

Hi World. Had a great week visiting schools.  Spoke with a principal who is into the technology scene – knows about blogging and social bookmarking.  Formulated idea to provide ideas for a student to the teacher aide via a www.youtube.com video link and also have it translated into the language the teacher aide speaks. It will be a positive outcome for the student – as the teacher aide can watch it over and over in the language she speaks.

This Web 2.0 technology is really all over the place. Tomorrow off to Christchurch to visit with the other South Island occupational therapists. Will be presenting to my colleauges on day 2 of the get together for the last 1/2 hour so probably we will all be pretty tired by then.

Tonight in class we learned about www.secondlife.com – a place called Second Life. Sort of a virtual world. Makes me think of the Truman Show movie………….   In second life, people can make money called Linden’s, etc.  One woman has made millions evidently on there. Pretty neat. Kind of scary though. Are we being taken over by technology?  Will we one day no longer need to chat with each other face to face?  Should we be worried?

Have to think about this one.

OK – that’s all for now.

Hey World,

Anna interviewed me Friday for Merrolee’s research. Realized what a techno girl I am becoming when I had the chance to reflect on things.  Have mixed feelings about use of technology – think people can get in big trouble with some of the instant messenging as you can be whoever and whatever you want.  Blogging, social bookmarking, Wiki, Bloglines, Google scholar, etc. – all those things seem pretty OK for the most part to learn about EVERYTHING out there from occupational therapy to labradors to recipes……

Then……..as I won’t be in class Monday as away for work – Merrolee showed me all about Wiki with a short video on YOUTUBE. Using a WIKI space is so much more efficient than emailing back and forth.  Neat stuff. Even thought I could take pics or video of stuff about the computer and send it to my mum – she’ll be able to watch it over and over and carry out the simple tasks on the computer I know she can do but she says she cannot!

I also posted on Wiki   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupational_therapy about pediatric OT practice in New Zealand. Used son of citation http://citationmachine.net/index.php?callstyle=2&all which is an unreal website that puts things in APA format FOR YOU. What a nightmare that was for me at Uni. Hooray.

Ok – off to prepare for the week.

 Cheers,

Jillian :)

Back on the blog June 6, 2007

Hi – missed class last week.  Feel way out of the loop.  Back into it. Getting into this blogging thing. The Pasifika Fono group may be interested in blogging, social bookmarking, etc.  It was Pasifika Day last Friday at work – dressed up in Pasifika gear and co-won first place and got a necklace of lollies to share with friends.  June 1st celebrated the one year anniversary of the Pasifika Education Plan http://www.minedu.govt.nz/index.cfm?layout=index&indexID=4332&indexparentid=4329

In my work, I have not worked as an occupational therapist with children with children from the Pacific Islands as far as I know.  It is interesting to learn about people from the Pacific Islands.  http://www.minedu.govt.nz/index.cfm?layout=index&indexID=10158&indexparentid=4329

OK – off to work as class.

Keep on blogging…………

Techno girl May 19, 2007

Learning more and more about this tech stuff. Funny how you run across people who are into technology.  Met the head of IT from Polson Higgs www.polsonhiggs.co.nz at a rugby game www.orfu.co.nz – under 16’s Taieri College.   Talked about the degree program for Bachelor of Information technology – www.otagopolytechnic.ac.nz.  Baxter the 2 year old golden labrador played with my wee dog Bella.  Fetching the tennis ball kept them busy for two hours. Bella will be the mascot for the team – gotta love labrador retrievers.  Neat the connections in a small community.  Keep on blogging. Rock on.

Greg Carroll’s Blog May 15, 2007

Hey bloggers – check out Greg Carroll’s blog http://blog.core-ed.net/greg/. Lots of stuff about RSS feeds, web 2.0, and Wiki stuff. I have to have a proper look. Think I’ll post on his site and see if I get people back to mine. He is miles beyond me with this stuff but hey – think he had an ICT sort of type job for a full year last year…..   Greg is a principal at Outram School in Dunedin area. I work with his wife Jane Carroll who is an SLT and widely published.

OK – off to work.

Staff meeting at GSE – presented……….. May 15, 2007

Filed under: general remarks, occupational therapy — bella49 @ 10:54 am

Hi bloggers. Got the chance to share with my colleagues at the MOE about the Web 2.0 project I am participating in with Merrolee Penman at Otago Polytech. They seemed keen to learn about it – all new to most of the staff. One of the SLT’s uses it as does her husband. She also has delicious social bookmarks.  Felt really comfortable up there talking about it which was a great thing. Still learning but am getting there.  Off to sleep now!!
